The town was originally called Morgan, TX but the name was changed to Alvin after another town bearing the same name sprang up.
The town grew quickly, aided by the railroad and many businesses moved into the area. A pickle factory, cotton gin, bank, hotels, churches and even an opera house quickly sprang up. The main base for the community was agriculture, and remains so to do this day. Ranching, poultry and dairy farms abound in the area.
Alvin is also rich in natural resources and several petrochemical and natural gas refineries were built in the 1940's. During World War II, an internment camp was located in Alvin, and over 500 Germans were held for two years.
