Bacliff is located on Farm Road 646 and Galveston Bay, just sixteen miles to the northwest of Galveston. The town was once called Clifton-by-the-sea and operated as a summer resort community until around the early 1950’s. The names Bacliff and Clifton-by-the-sea were used interchangeably, even after a post office was built in 1961.

Even though the tourist trade had declined, Bacliff became the new home of many Houston workers after the 1940’s. The proximity to Houston and Galveston made it the perfect place for a bedroom community comprised of mostly commuters. In 1940 the population was estimated at around 100 residents. After this expansion period, it grew to over 1,700 residents and was home to twenty-five businesses.

This number grew further during the 1980’s and 1990’s when Houston went through another expansion period. More people chose Bacliff for their home and the population was last estimated at over 5,400 people in 1990.

Currently, there are six churches, a school and over twenty-seven businesses located in Bacliff. Even though it is primarily a bedroom community, you’ll still be able to take care of your necessary shopping and business right at home, allowing you to commute during the week to Houston and enjoy the quiet town during the weekend.

If you’re looking for something exciting to do, Galveston offers a number of different opportunities. There are several art galleries and theaters in Galveston if you enjoy the arts and many different historical sites and museums located throughout Galveston and the rest of the county. Even though Bacliff may not have as much historical background as some towns there are still some historic sites that have been preserved and the county is rich in Texas history.

Houston also offers many different opportunities for fun. The Space Center is always popular, as is the Astrodome. There are plenty of historical sites, museums and educational centers that make learning fun for the whole family. If you enjoy amusement parks, Astroworld/Waterworld is a family favorite.

Whether you enjoy water sports or professional sports, you won’t be hard pressed to indulge your pleasure. Galveston Bay has some of the best fishing and boating in the area and is just minutes away.

Bacliff offers a rare chance to enjoy a seaside community that is so convenient to two major cities in Texas. You’ll be within minutes of either Galveston or Houston and all that these cities have to offer.

If you plan on working in either city or in the area, Bacliff is a great place to rent an apartment. You’ll be in the center of everything, and you’ll still have the ability to enjoy a peaceful community.
