Baytown, TX was first settled in 1822 by Nathaniel Lynch. Lynch set up a ferry at the junction of the San Jacinto River that connected settlers with Buffalo Bayou and it is still in operation today. William Scott was another early settler that obtained a land grant from Stephen Austin for 9,000 acres. In a short time, a town grew up near Scott's home on the Bay of San Jacinto and it became known as Bay Town.
The first stores and a sawmill were quickly started and more illustrious settlers poured into the area. Sam Houston lived there for a time, as well as David G. Burnett, and Mrs. Anson or Mary Smith McCrory. During the Civil War, Smith started the Bayland Guards for Confederate Services that became the Second Texas Regiment which fought at Shiloh and Vicksburg.
Although there was a lot of activity in the area, the town didn't develop much until the 20th century. At first, there were only two ways to access the town, either by ship or a bumpy road, making it difficult for commerce to get a foothold in the area. Once oil was struck in Baytown in 1908, things began to change in Bay Town. A new oil company, the Humble Oil and Refinery Co was founded and purchased 2,000 acres from the old Scott holding. This settlement became what is now known as Baytown, TX.
The town's roots were in oil and it slowly grew up and around the refinery. Streets were planned and built, utilities were brought into the area and houses began springing up. The oil company provided housing for their workers and as it became more successful, the town grew with it.
Baytown is home to more than 67,000 people and encompasses more than 32 square miles. Current day business still revolves around the oil industry but more industries are coming in. There are several schools, churches, and banks in the town, giving residents many different options. It is home to a large one-story shopping center, which is known as the nation's largest. Nearly 2,000 people are currently employed in the center. There two railroads and the new eight-lane Fred Hartman bridge, which replaced the Baytown-LaPorte Tunnel in 1990, spanning the Houston Ship Channel.
