Bellaire

Bellaire, Texas' routes began in Iowa, with a man named William Wright Baldwin. Baldwin moved to Texas in 1908 and started the Baldwin and Westmoreland Farms, a sprawling 9,449 acre ranch that would eventually become Bellaire, Texas. The town takes it name from the breezes that blow from the Gulf of Mexico, but some speculation has it that Baldwin named it for Bellaire, Ohio.

In 1910, Baldwin took $150,000 to beautify the prairie by adding numerous trees and other landscaping, to make the area more acceptable to new settlers. A trolley, known as the Toonerville Trolley began transporting residents until it was finally replaced in 1927 with a bus service. The Bellaire Post Office opened its doors in 1911 and the town began to quickly enlarge.

Several settlers arrived from Iowa and other Midwestern states as farmers looked to escape the harsh winters of the plains. More people began pouring into the area, including Edward Teas, a famed horticulturist. His services were employed to further landscape the town.
