Brookshire, Texas gets its name from Capt. Nathen Brookshire. Brookshire had received a league of land and was a member of Stephen Austin’s “Old Three Hundred.” This settlement was the fifth colony of Austin’s and was started around 1835. Today, you’ll find it located on US Highway 90 and Interstate Highway 10, thirty miles to the west of Houston.
At first, it was thought that the settlement was a waste of time and that the land, which was primarily prairie land, was not fit for agricultural pursuits. Nay-sayers were soon proved wrong when the alluvial soil was discovered. This soil is due in part to the Brazos riverbottom and the rich mineral deposits that were left in the area. A railroad soon came to the area and the settlement began thriving.
Since Brookshire was so close to Houston, it became an ideal shipping point for the railroad. Residents of the settlement began producing cotton, melons, corn and pecans and quickly flourished. A post office was built in 1893 and by 1897, the town paper boasted that thirty businesses had started in the area and that 10,000 bales of cotton had been shipped that year.
Once cotton prices slipped and demand shifted to other areas, residents of the settlement began producing rice. This move guaranteed the stability of the settlement and it continued to prosper. Agriculture has always been a big part of life to the residents of Brookshire and that remains the norm today.
In 1980, the population of Brookshire was estimated at around 2,200 residents and the main agricultural pursuits were rice, peanuts, soybeans and cattle. There are several churches located in Brookshire, as well as two banks, large businesses and a large, consolidated school district. The population has continued to go up since 1980 and current reports put the number of residents at around 2,900.
There are many historical sites in Brookshire and they have become popular attractions for residents and visitors. The former home of Dr. Paul Donigan, a prominent resident, was turned into the Waller County Museum. The town is full of historic homes, and plenty of educational opportunities to learn about how Brookshire was founded and survived throughout the years. The annual Waller County Festival is a big draw and is held to celebrate the diversity of the residents of Brookshire and the surrounding areas.
