Channelview

This suburb of metropolitan Houston is rich in natural resources as well as history. It is located where the San Jacinto River becomes Old River, just to the south of Interstate Highway 10 as well as the Missouri Pacific Railroad. It is just eight miles outside of Houston in the eastern part of Harris County. This location makes it ideal for apartment hunters looking to avoid a large city, but who still desire access to a larger city for work or recreation.

The town gets its name from its location. The Houston Ship Channel features a curve that runs to the northeast, providing a view of the entire channel. Residents began pouring into the town in 1916, when oil was discovered nearby. Oil refinery workers and their families chose Channelview as their new home.

The first post office was built in Channelview in 1933 and other businesses soon followed. An old map of the county shows a sawmill that is thought to have operated in the area in 1936. This map also highlighted several homes, a school and many businesses that were going strong at this time.

A Sinclair Petrochemical Plant came to the area in 1967, opening up new jobs in the area. Its main production consisted of isophtalic acid and metaxylene and is located near the ship's channel. These plants have provided a steady increase to the population of Channelview, which is currently estimated at 26,115 and features over 300 businesses. That is quite a jump from the population estimates of 700 in the 1940's.

The location of Channelview makes it a prime living area for many residents. There are many historic and scenic attractions in the area and Houston is just a short drive away. It is located close to Banana Bend Beach, a popular and beautiful recreational beach.

The San Jacinto Museum of History is also located nearby, as well as the San Jacinto Battleground State Historical Park. These attractions are educational as well as entertaining, particularly for families. Many historic battles took place in this area and visiting these sites is a great way to educate children and learn more about how the Republic of Texas was formed and the people that made it possible.

The location on the Channel also affords great opportunities for boating, fishing and more. If you like water sports, this is a great area to select for your new home. You'll be able to enjoy small town life just minutes from Houston.

In Houston, you'll find a variety of things to see and do. Several professional sports teams call Houston home, and there are hundreds of attractions for families in the area. Astroworld/Waterworld is a family favorite and features many activities that are sure to keep children entertained as well as providing a much needed way to keep cool during warm summer months.
