Clear Lake Shores can be found in Galveston County, on Clear Lake, approximately 22 minutes from Galveston. It is situated on Farm Road 2094, on the Harris County/Galveston County line. Galveston Bay is just a mile to the west and the community is surrounded by water on three sides.
The area began as a recreational retreat in the 1920’s. Developers divided up the land into 20x100 foot pieces of property or lots and these developers named the community Clear Lake Shores. Unfortunately, they picked a very bad time for their venture, as the Great Depression socked the United States.
Land prices plummeted and demand was nonexistent. It was reported in the Houston Post that one lot in Clear Lake Shores was selling for just $69.50 and even included a free six-month subscription to the newspaper. This low price did attract some residents, who built summer homes in the area.
By 1936, a highway survey map showed that some homes had gone up right near the Texas and New Orleans Railway. After World War II, things improved for Clear Lake Shores as more people moved into the area and sought homes that were convenient to the larger cities in the area.
This time period saw a water facility open and permanent homes sprang up around the summer cottages. The town was incorporated in 1962, selecting a mayor-council form of government.
By 1971, the population had expanded to 671 residents. This figure has steadily increased and the last estimate in 2000 placed the amount of residents at around 1,205. Although the price of land has gone up significantly since the Depression, you’ll be able to find a reasonably priced apartment in a beautiful town.
Clear Lake Shores is a bedroom community, but there are still a few businesses that support the residents. You’ll find several marinas in Clear Lake Shores and boating is one of the primary leisure pursuits in the area. The town is known as the “Yachting Capital of Texas.”
