This oddly named town is located just about forty minutes from Houston and six miles from Conroe, Texas. The town is located in the eastern portion of Montgomery County and may be referred to as Cut ‘n Shoot or Cut N Shoot, depending on the map or who you ask.
The strange name is due to an altercation that is believed to have taken place in 1921. Violence was narrowly averted over either the design of a new steeple for a church, or the land claims from church members. The version of the story depends, again, on who you ask.
Apparently, a boy shouted in the midst of the argument, “I’m going to cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes in a minute!” These words stuck in the minds of the residents and eventually, it made its way into being the town name instead of just a slogan.
No one recorded the population of Cut and Shoot until around 1975, when it was estimated that 50 people lived within the town. The town was later incorporated and this number jumped up to 809 by the 1980’s. A new post office was built in Cut and Shoot in the middle of the 1980’s. Currently, about 903 residents call Cut and Shoot home.
Many residents commute to nearby Houston and return to the community in the evening. The name may not give the impression of a quiet, peace-loving town, but it has changed throughout the years. Claims have been settled, steeples are already built, small children do not hide in the bushes and it looks like smooth sailing from here on out.
The growth in population during the 1980’s and 1990’s was due to the expansion of Houston and the desire of many people to live outside of the large city. Since Cut and Shoot is close to Houston, many commuters selected it as their new home. Its central location makes it a great place to rent an apartment.
You’ll be able to learn more about the history of Cut and Shoot right from the residents, but make sure you ask enough people to get a good idea of what really happened. Although their stories conflict, the consensus is that Cut and Shoot is a nice place to live and raise a family, particularly if you enjoy living in a town with a not-so-common name.
