Damon

Damon, Texas was first known as Damon’s Mound or Damon Mound and is located on the junction of Farm Road 1462 and State Highway 36 in the northwestern portion of Brazoria County. The town is perched on what is known as a geological outcropping. This is a formation that creates a mound, with flat lands surrounding it.

The town is named for Samuel Damon, who first settled the area in 1831. He married the daughter of Abraham Darst, Lorena, and the two built their home on the southern side of the mound. After their house was built, more people came into the area and by 1890, 100 residents called Damon Mound their home. A post office was built and received mail every two weeks, which was uncommonly regular during this time period.

A physician, carpenter, shoemaker and several livestock producers were also active at this time. Delivery to the post office was halted for a brief time in 1892, but reopened in 1895. It was during this second opening that the town took the name of Damon instead of Damon or Damon’s Mound.

The population dipped in 1896, to only 40 residents, but a Baptist church went up around this time. This figure increased and in 1906, a schoolteacher was hired to teach 40 children from the town.

A twenty-one mile extension was built by the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway in 1918. This extension connected Damon with Rosenberg and assisted the livestock producers as well as the sulfur, mineral and limestone extraction companies in their industries.

300 residents living in Damon by 1925 and a Catholic parish had begun. Within six years, a bank was added, as well as fifteen new businesses, and an independent school district. The population at this time was estimated at around 260 residents.

In 1939, the bank had closed and the railway connection to Guy, Texas closed as well. Despite this, the population continued to increase, with the top number at around 400 residents between the 1940’s and 1980. By 1985, this number sank a little to 375 residents and sixteen businesses. These businesses include a taxidermist, a quarry, boot shops, feed stores, appliance stores and a few convenience stores. There are four churches still operating in Damon, as well as the Lion’s Club.

The Damon family still lives in the area, and held their annual reunion at Damon, Texas during the 1980’s. Although many of them have moved on to new areas, you’ll still find a couple living in Damon and the surrounding towns.

Damon has a reputation as a quiet, peaceful town and it is a favorite with many commuters. Its location to State Highway 36 makes it easy to commute to larger cities and offers a chance to get away from it all, without being stranded from civilization.
