Dickinson

Dickinson was founded in 1824, on land that was granted to John Dickinson from the Mexican government. It is believed that an actual settlement existed in the area as early as 1850, and grew once the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad built a track right through the town.

During the Civil War, Dickinson was a Confederate outpost and boasted a confederate hospital. The railroad line was used in the successful retaking of Galveston by General John Magruder.

Following the Civil War, a land company called the Dickinson Land and Improvement Association was formed by Fred M. Nichols and eight other partners. This company began marketing the land in outlying areas. Settlers came into the area as reports surfaced that the area was fertile. Crops such as fruit, cane, potatoes and berries did very well in the soil.

As the town continued to grow, more people from Galveston and other large cities began to visit on a regular basis. Dickinson became an oasis, full of parks, horse racing and many more attractions. In 1911, the Oleander Country Club was formed by the elite citizens of Dickinson and many wealthy people built homes in the area.

The current population is approximately 9,500 and this number has fluctuated throughout the years. Factors such as the oil business, the war and a new space center located nearby have led to this fluctuation. Currently, Dickinson is known for its residential community, agricultural pursuits and as the site of a mineral oil processing factory.

There are plenty of things to see and do in Dickinson. The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center is located in Webster, TX, just a few miles north, and is a popular attraction. The Dickinson Railroad Museum gives visitors a chance to learn more about Dickinson's history and the role that the railroad played in building this town.

There is a very active historical society, which means that the historical sites will be preserved for more generations to come. If you enjoy history, Dickinson is certainly packed full of museums and historical centers to whet your appetite. Most of these locations are nearby many different apartment complexes, making them easy to access.

The annual Wine and Cheese Event and Auction is a wildly popular event. The auction is a lot of fun and people come from all over the state just to attend. There is also an annual Festival of Lights that takes place each year in December.

The city hall in Dickinson is currently being remodeled and there is a great significance attached to maintaining the historical nature of Dickinson. Whether you just want a quiet place to raise a family that is still near Houston, or if you enjoy a place that is rich in history, culture and fun, Dickinson has much to offer.
