Fresno

Fresno is located on Farm Road 521 in the northeastern section of Fort Bend County. The county seat of Fort Bend County, Richmond, Texas, is located about twenty miles away and Houston is within a short drive.

The first settlers arrived in what is now Fresno in 1824. A land patent shows that the area was once home to many cotton plantations. It is believed that one of the first settlers was originally from Fresno, CA and picked the name of the town. It slowly grew up around these plantations and by 1910, a post office was built. Four years later telephone services were installed for the residents.

During this time, there were about thirty-two residents in Fresno, a general store and a hardware store. However, in the years leading up to 1933, many of the residents left the area, most likely due to the Great Depression. The population dwindled to ten residents and only one business was still operating.

Three years later, Fresno’s fortunes changed again. An old map shows that there were three rows of houses on either side of a paved highway that had been recently constructed. The town was also being served by the International-Great Northern Railroad, and this accounts for the rapid rise in population.

From the mid 1940’s through the 1960’s, the population stayed stable at approximately 100 residents. The expansion of Houston during the 1970’s and 1980’s brought more people into the town, particularly commuters who wanted to work in Houston and live in a smaller community. By 1990, the population had grown to 3,182 residents.
