Galena Park

Galena Park can be found in eastern Harris County, Texas, right near the Houston Ship Channel. It was founded in 1824 by Ezekiel Thomas when he received a land grant from the Mexican government and moved his family into the area. Upon his death, the land was then sold to Isaac Batterson who began a settlement on Buffalo Bayou. This settlement was known as Clinton and it started off as a primarily ranching and agricultural community.

Through the years, one of Clinton's most respected residents, Charles Morgan, poured his money and resources into the area, further developing the settlement. The Bayou was dredged in 1876, and excavated to form a channel across the port. Clinton became a shipping town and prospered further when the railroad came through.

The early part of the 1900's brought in the oil men as oil was discovered across Texas. Clinton's first refinery was built by the Galena Signal Oil Company of Texas. The town eventually changed its name to Galena Park in honor of this company in 1935. This name change was the result of a discovery of another Clinton, TX that had put a halt to the town's plans for a post office. Once the name change was in place, everything went forward as planned for the community. The name of Clinton wasn't completely forgotten, thanks in part to the town's main street, which is named, Clinton Drive.

The population estimate for Galena Park currently sits at around 10,000. The community has been considered a part of Houston since the 1940's and is a popular area for apartment dwellers. The closeness to Houston, coupled with the serenity of a smaller town has made Galena a prime location.
