

In east-central Liberty County, you’ll find the town of Hardin, TX, at the junction of State Highway 146 and Farm Road 834. Beaumont is located about forty-eight miles away and Houston is a just a short drive from the town.
The town began after the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway came through the area. A family by the name of Hardin donated the land so that a town could be built in the area and the settlement was named for this family.
In 1907, W.F. Hardin, a railroad officer and R.C. Duff, the president of the Western Townsite Company filed a plat for the town. The town grew slowly, but surely and by 1920, the post office in nearby Walter, TX was moved to Hardin. At this time, business was booming in Hardin, and it was home to a school, a cotton gin, two churches and many different stores as well as approximately eighty residents.
1935 brought the discovery of oil to the region and a field west of town was the first deposit of oil to be found in Hardin. Other discoveries in fields surrounding Hardin were soon made and a new economy was born. People began flooding into Hardin and the surrounding communities.
The town was incorporated in 1971 and by 1980, 779 people called Hardin home. The population has declined a little since then, with the latest figures putting it at around 563 residents.
