

Hedwig Village is currently the smallest incorporated municipality in Harris County. You’ll find it located on the edge of Houston, just south of Interstate Highway 10. The entire town is located on about one square mile of land, and like many communities in the area, uses the word “village” in its name.
Hedwig Village is a largely affluent, residential community. It is in what is known as the Spring Branch Memorial area. This area is part of leagues that were originally owned by John D. Taylor and Isaac Bunker.
The area was settled in part by German immigrants and was named Hedwig Village after the nearby Hedwig Road. The town is located on land that was donated by Hedwig Jankowski Schroeder. Hedwig first came to the area in 1906 with her husband. They came from Germany with the hopes of farming the rich Texas soil.
The town remained small through the years, but it incorporated in 1954, selecting a mayor-council form of government. Currently, there is a mayor and the town council is made of up five people. In 1954, after the incorporation was passed, zoning ordinances were put in place to make sure that the land of the town was used in an orderly fashion.
During the mid-1960’s Hedwig Village had two schools, two churches, a bank and a library as well as around 1,182 residents. A park was added to Hedwig during the 1970’s, giving residents a beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors.
The schools in and around Hedwig Village are part of the Spring Branch Independent School District and offer students a fine education. As Houston expanded in the 1970’s more families came to the area, and the population went as high as 3,994 by 1980. This number has since dropped back down to 2,616 residents as of 1990.
In addition to great schools and a park, Hedwig Village has much to offer the apartment dweller. The zoning regulations have made the town very orderly, and you won’t have to worry about your apartment being next to a factory or a loud business. You’ll also be just outside of Houston, making Hedwig Village a favorite with commuters.
Houston is a popular place for many Hedwig Village residents to work. It is located just minutes away from their homes, but not too close as to cause disruption. Houston is also home to some great golf courses, amusement parks, educational centers, historical sites and much more.
