Just about eight miles from Houston lies the community of Hilshire Village, TX, right off of Buffalo Bayou and Interstate 10. Hilshire Village is located in Harris County and is home of many unique historical sites and opportunities.
Hilshire Village is one of six villages that make up a group of communities known as the Memorial Villages. This town was founded in 1940 when a man named Frank Bruess and his mother moved from Missouri and bought 30 acres of land. They hadn’t decided on a name for their new purchase and it was on a trip to Boston that Bruess finally found a name that appealed to him.
While in Boston, Bruess read about a country estate that was located in Hillshire, England and he liked the sound of it. When he returned, he picked the name of Hilshire Village for his new development. For some reason, he omitted one of the “l’s” but this reason was not recorded.
The construction of the development was started during the 1950’s and the community incorporated early in 1955. Its population grew steadily, and it was home to over 543 residents by 1960. This number went up to 627 by 1970 and has been steady ever since.
Currently, it is estimated that around 720 residents live in Hilshire Village. Development is still going home and “patio homes” are frequently built. Many original residents have torn down their old homes and replaced them with larger dwellings in recent years.
When Hilshire Village incorporated, they selected a mayor-council form of government and that is still in operation today. The town of Spring Valley which is located nearby currently provides police and emergency services to the residents of Hilshire Village. This town also provides schools for resident’s children, if they do not attend the one private school located in Hilshire Village.
The town is mainly made up of residential housing, but you will find a small area that has been set aside for commerical development. Currently, there is a beauty salon, a flower shop and three churches in Hilshire Village.
With Houston being just eight minutes away, Hilshire Village is very popular with commuters. Many of the residents currently commute to Houston and other cities in the area. At the end of the day, they are able to return to their quiet community, that still offers quite a few amenities.
Houston is home to amusement parks, a Space Center and the Astrodome, as well as Sam Houston Race Park and many other facilities. If you enjoy parks and historical sites, you won’t be disappointed in this area. There are also many world-class golf courses throughout Houston and the surrounding areas, as well as theaters, music festivals and much more.
