Whether you have heard this town referred to as Hitchcock, the Highlands, or Hitchcock’s, you’ll find it located about 14 miles northeast of Galveston on State Highway 6, Farm Roads 519 and 2000 and on the line of the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad.
The first settlers came into this area during the mid 1800’s. Jonas Butler purchased a league of land in 1848 on Highland Bayou and built the area’s first house. Parts of this house were still standing as of 1940. French settlers followed Butler and they also established homes on the Bayou.
The name Highlands comes from the topography of the Bayou. Until the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad came through the area in the 1870’s, many people used the Bayou to get to Galveston. In 1873, the town was renamed Hitchcock when the widow of Lent M. Hitchcock, Emily, gave a tract of land for the town to the railroad, with the request it be named after her late husband.
The post office was built in 1884 and residents began settling the area. Farmers prospered with the location of the railroad and soon began shipping their produce all over the state. The public school was built in 1894 and the town began to grow. By 1914, there was a bank, a blacksmith, three general stores, a hotel, and 550 residents called Hitchcock home.
During the 1930’s many people left Hitchcock, but after World War II, oil was discovered and more people came to the area. Camp Wallace was constructed nearby and the United States Navy built a blimp base to be used as a surveillance base for enemy submarines. Both were used as discharge centers and many people decided to stay in the area.
Hitchcock incorporated in 1960 and the population reached an all-time high of 6,954 shortly thereafter. This number fell slightly during the 1970’s, but rose again when the NASA Project Apollo Laboratory Project facility was built just minutes away. During this time period, Hitchcock became a residential community, and the majority of the residents commuted to nearby Houston, Clearwater, and other surrounding cities.
As of 2000, 214 businesses and 6,380 residents were in Hitchcock. The town offers a yacht basin and many resort facilities, which have increased the tourist trade and offer local residents a great place for boating and fun. In August, the annual Good Ole Days Parade is a big event and many residents come out to enjoy the fun. You’ll also be able to take part in the annual Christmas Parade every December.
Residential communities are a great place to rent an apartment. You’ll be just minutes away from your job in Houston or other cities, and you can return to the peaceful community at the end of your workday.
