Jersey Village

Jersey Village is an incorporated suburb of Houston, located on Farm Road 529 and US Highway 290. The Southern Pacific line also goes through the area and the town is in west central Harris County.

A map that was drawn of the area in 1936 for the highway project shows that there were homes in the area during this time, but it wasn’t until 1953 that the town had its official start. Clark W. Henry and N.E. Kennedy and Son began to develop the area that was located on Jersey Lake.

Homesites soon went up and the name for the town was chosen. There are many schools of thought on how the name was chosen, including Henry’s experience at running a dairy filled with Jersey cows.

At first, children of the residents had to go to school in the neighboring towns of Cypress and Fairbanks, but a school was finally built a short while later in town. A park and an eighteen hole golf course soon followed.

In 1956, the town was incorporated and a volunteer police force began. A high school was built in the town in 1972 and the population began to climb. From 1960 to 1980, the number of residents increased from 493 to 966.

The expansion of Houston in the 1980’s drove this number up much higher as people began to search for homes in the suburbs. In 1982, the approximate number of residents reached 4,084, going up to 5,143 by 1988 and was most recently estimated at around 4,938 residents.

If you enjoy golfing, this is certainly an area of Texas that has more than enough courses from which to choose. You’ll find your own course conveniently located in Jersey Village, as well as several more throughout the county and in Houston.

Houston is full of surprises and its proximity makes it easy to commute, returning to Jersey Village at the end of your day. You’ll be just a few minutes from exciting professional sports at the Astrodome in Houston, or at the Sam Houston Race Track. If you enjoy horse racing, this track has some of the best and most competitive races in the state.

You’ll also find a myriad of restaurants in Houston, with a wide range of cuisine. If you enjoy Texas cooking, Mexican food or just about any other type of food under the sun, you won’t be disappointed in your choices. There are also a number of department stores, antique shops and boutiques located throughout Houston, making it easy to decorate your new apartment.

Living in a suburban community has its advantages. The crime rates are much lower and the overall atmosphere is much more peaceful than it is in larger cities.
