Jones Creek, Texas is found in Brazoria County, about twelve miles southwest of Angleton on State Highway 36 and the Gulf Prairie. Houston is also nearby and within a short drive.
This region of Texas saw its first settlers in the 1820’s. These settlers were mainly Anglo Americans, and many of them were part of Stephen Austin’s Old Three Hundred. They built several cotton plantations in the area, and these plantations ran through the Civil War. After the war, many of the plantations failed and the population of the area dwindled.
This remained the case for many years until after World War II. It was during this time period that Jones Creek became part of the Brazosport industrial and port area, with many other cities in the area. By 1956, the population increased to 2,851 and nine businesses had opened in the area.
In 1957, Jones Creek expanded to include Perry’s Landing, Peach Point, Peach Crest and Gulf Park. Gulf Park was a residential community that had been founded in 1927 by Robert E.L. Stringfellow and P. George Maercky from the Freeport Sulphur Company.
Jones Creek incorporated in 1970 and the population remained steady, declining somewhat in 1972. A map that was drawn in 1974 showed that there was a school, two churches, several buildings and many homes scattered throughout the town. 1982 brought a renewal and the population was estimated at an all time high of 2,634.
The last population estimate in 1990 showed that 2,160 residents called Jones Creek their home. Many of these residents commute to jobs in nearby towns or Houston, making this community largely residential.
