In central Liberty County Texas, you’ll find Kenefick forty-one miles to the northeast of Houston at the junction of Farm Roads 1008 and 2797. Liberty County is home to many historic towns and Kenefick is one that is rich in Texas history.
The town was first settled in 1830 when Reason Green moved to the area with his slaves. Not much happened in the settlement until the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railroad came through the area in 1904 and was built by the Kenefick Construction Company.
Kenefick was named for the owner of the construction company and it quickly sprouted up alongside the rail line. This area of Texas was rich in timber and many logging companies moved into the area. Kenefick was home to many sawmills and a local commissary was built to serve the workers.
The second industry in the town’s main economy was agriculture and has remained so to this day. In 1956, the Kenefick voting precinct was established and incorporation soon followed in 1968 and was unanimously passed. In 1973, the population was estimated at around 150 residents and has since grown to around 435.
