La Marque

La Marque is also known as Highlands or by Buttermilk Station and is a community located on Interstate Highway 45, State Highway 3 and Farm Roads 519, 1765 and 2004. Galveston is located just a few miles away to the southeast.

La Marque's location near Highlands Creek is responsible for the town's original name. Residents were forced to change the name when another town bearing this moniker was discovered. In 1890, the town was renamed and has been known as La Marque from that time on. The person responsible for choosing this name was Madame St. Ambrose, who was the postmistress for the town. She selected the French phrase for "the mark" most likely due to her profession.

The name of Buttermilk Station was assigned during the Civil War by soldiers who frequently purchased their buttermilk from the town stores on their way to either Galveston or Houston. This nickname has stuck with the town for many years following this time.

As the population grew, more schools and churches were added in the area. After 1914, four different railroads came through the area, making the town even more viable and giving the local economy a shot in the arm. Since this time, the population estimates for La Marque have remained in good shape, and many people are discovering just how special this community is.

Eventually, the growth of the community and the growth of its neighbor, Texas City, more jobs were created and more people moved into the community. Current population estimates place the residents of La Marque at right around 15,000. La Marque has longed served as a sleep-over town. Workers in nearby oil refineries and manufacturing plants made their homes in La Marque, enjoying its peaceful atmosphere.
