At the intersection of State Highways 6 and 288 with Farm Road 1128, you’ll find the town of Manvel, TX in Brazoria County. Houston is within a short drive away and Brazoria County is full of many things to see and do,
The original name of Manvel was Pomona, but this was changed after the discovery of another town in Texas with this name. The spelling may have been a little different, but the residents were determined to express their individuality. They renamed the town, Manvel, after the future president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
The very first settlers in Manvel were the relatives of W.R. Booth. This family first lived on Chocolate Bayou in 1857. Two years later, tracks were laid through the area for the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad, on the route from Galveston to Arcola.
The railroad crossing became the original townsite and it was formed in 1890. The community quickly grew and two years later the post office was built. Three more years saw the population grow to 350 and the addition of a grocer, a general store, a doctor, a real estate agent and two telegraph agents.
However, disaster loomed on the horizon. In 1895, a snowstorm devastated local crops. Four years later, a tornado whipped through the area, and a storm in 1900 further decimated the orchards and crops in the area. The residents were determined to stay put and they dug in.
This determination paid off and by 1906, Manvel had a new school, attended by twenty-nine students. The population remained steady but low through the coming years, and throughout the Great Depression.
In 1931, oil was discovered in Manvel and things began to turn around. The Texas Oil Company built a well and the town quickly became an oil community and prospered. In 1936, rice farming was introduced into the area and production began on a large scale.
110 residents called Manvel home by 1975, but this number quickly shot up to 3,549 by 1985, due in part to the expansion of nearby Houston. This number went up to 4,441 by 1988 and was most recently estimated at 3,733 in 1990.
Manvel offers a quiet, residential community that is still close to Houston and is a favorite among commuters. Many residents commute to Houston or are employed by local oil companies. Whether you’re looking for a change of pace from a large city, or you just prefer the atmosphere of a smaller town, Manvel is a great place to start.
Houston and all it has to offer for entertainment is just minutes away. You’ll be within a short drive from terrific restaurants, shopping, professional sports, horseracing, and amusement parks.
