Missouri City

Missouri City got its name from a promotional campaign that was used to attract new settlers to the area in the 1890's. Two men, R.M. Cash and L.E. Luckle, both Houston Real Estate developers, purchased four square miles of land about twenty-six miles southeast of Houston. They began to advertise in St. Louis papers and decided to use the gimmick of naming the town Missouri City to induce more people to come. The ads convinced people that Missouri City was "the land of genial sunshine and perpetual summer," and they worked.

Missouri City was officially registered in Texas in 1894 and the settlers came pouring in. As humor would have it, the first settlers were actually from Arlington, Texas and not from Missouri. By the early 1900's several homes, stores and a Catholic Church had been built. Although a hurricane destroyed the first Catholic Church in 1915, another was soon built and is still standing today.

The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado railroad became a big part of the town when they came through the area in the late 1800's. A station was built and landowners took advantage of this convenience to ship produce and goods all over the country.

1919 brought the discovery of oil in the area and a refinery soon sprang up. Shortly thereafter, a salt mine was also begun as well. 1926 brought the discovery of Natural Gas and Missouri City became the first town in the county to make use of this resource. The town has continued to prosper since this time.

Currently, there are many different activities in Missouri City to keep you busy. The East Fort Bend Heritage Society was founded in the city and works hard to maintain and preserve historical sites in the area until its end in the late 1980's. The work the group did is still evident in the wonderfully preserved historical sites all throughout Missouri City.

There are numerous parks in Missouri City. These parks are well maintained and offer residents a great opportunity to enjoy nature just minutes from their homes and apartments. There is also a civic center and a community center that provide residents with entertainment and special care.

The population of Missouri City is estimated at over 36,000 people and the main areas of commerce are still ranching and farming, with petrochemical plants coming in a close second. Whether you plan to work in the area, or you are planning on working in nearby Houston, Missouri City is full of peaceful residences and many things to do. The majority of the residents in Missouri City commute to Houston or the surrounding larger cities, but enjoy the peaceful climate when they return to their community.

The annual Oktoberfest is always popular, as well as the Snowfest and annual Easter Egg Hunt. If you enjoy learning more about the history of Texas, there are also numerous museums and historical sites in Missouri City and the surrounding communities.
