Ten miles to the south of Conroe, TX, you’ll find the community of Oak Ridge North on Interstate Highway 45. The town is located in the southern portion of historic Montgomery County.
This residential community was started in 1964 by Spring Pines Corporation, a company based in Arkansas. This company purchased the land north of Spring Creek and began to plan and build their subdivision. The town was completed at the same time Interstate 45 was finished, further solidifying its appeal.
Many of the first residents of Oak Ridge North were from Houston. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, Houston began to expand and many of its residents went looking for new communities that offered lower city taxes, better insurance rates and were still convenient to their jobs in Houston. Oak Ridge North attracted many of these home seekers due to the beauty of the community and its accessibility.
In 1969, a new company, United Diversified Incorporated, purchased the subdivision and began new developments in the community. Two years later, another company, Associated Properties Co bought more acreage for the subdivision and then became the primary developer for the community.
In 1979, Oak Ridge North was incorporated. A new mayor and city council were then elected by the 2,445 residents after the incorporation took place. The town grew steadily after this point, and by the later part of the 1970’s four churches had been built and more residents arrived.
In the 1980’s Texas went through an energy-based recession and the boom in Oak Ridge North leveled off. By 1990, the population was estimated at around 2.454 residents. Many of these residents are commuters, with jobs in Houston or nearby larger cities. The children in Oak Ridge North go to four different schools that are operated by the Conroe Independent School District.
If you’re looking for a change of pace from life in the city, but you can’t afford to leave your job, Oak Ridge North is a great place to rent an apartment. You’ll still be within a short drive to Houston and all that this city has to offer.
If you enjoy professional sports, the Astrodome is a great place to catch a game. After the game, you’ll be in the midst of some of the finest restaurants in Texas and the whole country. If you would rather shop than watch sports, there are hundreds of unique stores, antique shops, department stores and much more in Houston.
Life is a residential community can be described as having the best of both worlds. You’ll be able to have a quiet apartment in a smaller town, and still just be minutes from your job in a larger city. The crime rates are lower, as are the taxes and the atmosphere is hard to duplicate anywhere else.
