South Side Place is a suburb of Houston, located in central Harris County. The town of West University Place and Bellaire, TX almost completely encompasses South Side Place, but it is still an independent municipality.

In 1934, the area of the town was approximately one square mile and it incorporated during this year. At this time, there were approximately 600 residents living with the town’s limits. The post office was built in 1940 and before World War II many new residents moved into the area.

The population increased to 1,500 during the 1960’s and then dropped down to 1,263 by 1979. There was another jump in the population during the 1980’s as more people moved to the suburbs and then it leveled off to around 1,384 residents as of 1990.

Inside the community you’ll find a park that is run by the South Side Park Association and each resident of the town is a member of this association and has a vote and a share in all that the association undertakes. There are approximately 36 businesses currently operating in South Side and they are located on a narrow strip that has been designated as a commercial area.

South Side Place is mainly a residential community, and many commuters from Houston have chosen it as their new home. It is the ideal place to rent an apartment if you plan to work in Houston, but prefer life in a smaller town. You’ll have enough businesses located close by and Houston is a very short drive away.

Nearby West University Place is an interesting place to visit. It was developed in 1910 when the governor of Texas, Ben W. Cooper picked the area for a new section of country homes. During the first few years of the development, the homes that were built were all designed in the “Braewood” styling and were located on curvilinear streets.

This design scheme changed during the 1940’s to one-story ranch homes, but you can still find some of the unique first homes that are still standing today. West University Place is home to several churches and a library. Much like South Side Place, the residents of West University rely on Houston for their schooling and recreational needs.

Houston has many different recreational opportunities. The Houston Space Center is a great place to learn about the history of our country’s space program and to find out what is ahead. You’ll be able to view a replica of Mission Control and tour the facility. This is a great place to bring children to learn about our galaxy and the efforts that are being made to explore it.

The Astrodome is a great place to catch a game and you’ll have many choices for dining afterwards. When you’re done having fun in Houston, you’ll be able to return to your apartment in the quiet community of South Side Place.
