Williams’ brother Nathaniel bought the land in 1838 and began a plantation with Matthew, the third Willaims’ brother. The plantation was known for its production of sugarcane and a mill was built in 1843. Benjamin Terry and William J. Kyle purchased the plantation in 1858 and ran it until their deaths in 1861 and 1864, respectively. After this period of time, the plantation began to decline.
This changed when E.H. Cunningham, a man of great wealth and power put over $1 million into a sugar refinery, a paper mill, a raw sugar mill and the Sugar Land Railroad during the 1890’s. This infusion of funds as well as the selection of Sugar Mill to have a railroad station brought the area back.
The population of the town waxed and waned as it struggled to survive during the coming traumatic years. The Kempner family purchased the entire town in 1946 and began to sell land in the area. Sugar Land was incorporated shortly thereafter. A new mayor was elected and the population began to go up again. Currently, there are approximately 24,529 residents living in Sugar Land.
